How to scale a reference image to your canvas

Your photo and your canvas are almost never the same shape. This guide explains aspect ratios, the conversion ratio that lets you enlarge accurately, and how to decide what to crop, with worked examples you can follow.

How to scale a reference image

Every artist who works from photographs hits the same wall eventually. Your reference is a 4000 by 3000 pixel photo. Your canvas is 60 by 40 centimetres. Those are not the same shape, and getting from one to the other without distortion trips up more beginners than almost anything else.

The good news is that the maths involved is simple once you see it laid out. This guide walks through aspect ratios, the single calculation that lets you enlarge accurately, and how to make smart decisions about what to keep and what to lose.

The scaling problem

Scaling means changing the size of an image while keeping its proportions intact. The trouble starts when the proportions of your reference do not match the proportions of your canvas. At that point you cannot simply stretch the photo to fit, because stretching distorts everything. Circles become ovals, and faces widen or narrow in ways that feel wrong even when the viewer cannot explain why.

So instead of stretching, you have to make a decision about how the mismatched shapes will meet. That decision is the real skill, and it comes down to understanding aspect ratio.

Aspect ratio in plain terms

Aspect ratio is just the relationship between width and height, written as two numbers with a colon, such as 3:2 or 4:5. A standard camera photo is often 3:2. A sheet of A4 paper is close to 1:1.41. Many painting canvases come in 4:5 or 1:1. If two things share the same ratio, one will scale into the other perfectly, no cropping required.

To find any aspect ratio, divide the width by the height. A 6000 by 4000 photo gives 1.5, which is the same as 3:2. A 40 by 50 centimetre canvas gives 0.8, which is 4:5. Because 1.5 and 0.8 are not equal, that photo and that canvas do not match, and you will have to crop or add space somewhere.

Width divided by height gives you a single number for any image. If your reference and your canvas produce the same number, they scale together perfectly. If the numbers differ, the gap between them tells you exactly how much you will need to crop or add.

Crop, fit, or add space

When the ratios do not match, you have three honest options, and none of them involve stretching.

Crop to fill. Enlarge the image until it covers the whole canvas, letting the parts that hang over the edges fall away. This keeps the subject at full size but sacrifices some of the background. It is the most common choice for portraits and bold compositions.

Fit inside. Shrink the image until the whole thing sits within the canvas, accepting some empty border on two sides. This keeps every part of the photo but leaves margins you will need to deal with, either as negative space or by extending the background.

Recompose. Rather than accept whatever the automatic crop gives you, slide the image around so the crop falls where you want it. The conversion ratio

Once your composition is settled, one small number lets you transfer measurements accurately from the reference to the canvas. It is called the conversion ratio, and you find it by dividing a canvas dimension by the matching dimension on your reference.

Say the part of the photo you are keeping is 20 centimetres wide when printed, and your canvas is 60 centimetres wide. Sixty divided by twenty is three. That three is your conversion ratio. Any measurement you take on the reference, you multiply by three to find where it belongs on the canvas. An eye that sits 7 centimetres from the left edge of the print sits 21 centimetres from the left edge of the canvas.

A worked example

Let us walk through a real mismatch from start to finish.

You have a 3:2 landscape photo and you want to paint it on a 50 by 50 centimetre square canvas, a ratio of 1:1. The two clearly do not match, so cropping is unavoidable. You decide to crop to fill, which means keeping the full height of the photo and losing some width from the sides.

Because the canvas is square, the width of the photo you keep must equal its height. If you print the photo so its height is 10 centimetres, you keep a 10 centimetre wide strip through the middle and let the rest hang off. Now find the conversion ratio: the canvas is 50 centimetres tall, the kept area is 10 centimetres tall, so 50 divided by 10 is 5. Every measurement on your reference gets multiplied by five to place it on the canvas. A tree trunk 3 centimetres in from the edge lands 15 centimetres in on the canvas.

That is the whole method. Pick what to keep, print or measure it, divide to get the ratio, then multiply every measurement by that number.

Why a grid does the scaling for you

Here is the elegant part. Once you draw a grid over your kept area and the same number of squares over your canvas, the conversion ratio is baked in automatically. You no longer multiply anything. A shape that crosses the third square from the left on the reference crosses the third square from the left on the canvas, whatever the physical size of those squares.

This is the real reason the grid method and scaling go hand in hand. The grid turns a fiddly measuring job into simple matching of squares, and it enlarges perfectly no matter how big the difference between your reference and your canvas. Compose while you crop

Cropping is not just a technical necessity, it is a creative opportunity. When you decide what falls outside the canvas, you are composing. A couple of ideas worth keeping in mind while you do it.

The rule of thirds. Placing your main subject a third of the way in, rather than dead centre, usually makes for a livelier composition. When you shift the crop, aim your focal point towards one of those third lines.

Give the subject room to breathe. Leave a little more space in the direction a person is looking or a figure is moving. A face pressed right against the edge it is facing feels cramped.

Protect the important edges. Decide which parts of the image you absolutely cannot lose, then crop the rest around them. It is far better to sacrifice background than to clip the top of a head.

Final thoughts

Scaling a reference to a canvas comes down to three ideas: never stretch, decide how the mismatched shapes will meet, and use either a conversion ratio or a grid to transfer measurements faithfully. Master those and you can paint from any photo onto any canvas with confidence.
